Sure, there’s the must-see Blowhole, but Kiama has much more in store for kids. Here are some of our top stops to ignite your little loves’ imaginations during – and long after – their stay. There is plenty to do in Kiama for Kids.
MIND BLOWN
After you’ve visited the famed Kiama Blowhole (which you’ll find at the end of Blowhole Point road, below the Kiama Lighthouse), make sure you stop in and see the wonder of the Kiama’s Little Blowhole, too. You’ll find it just off Tingira Crescent, three kilometres south of the town centre. It’s an easy climb down from the viewing platform, where you’ll be treated to an up close whopping sound of the amazing compressed air show. The spray reaches some seriously remarkable heights, and chances are it will be less busy than it’s popular older brother. From here, you can walk around the headland to beautiful Easts Beach.
ROCK ON
We boast some of the best beaches for sandcastle building and boogie-boarding, but for a truly memorable swim take your little ones to one of the family-friendly rock pools. Have a splash in The Continental Pool (AKA the Olympic Pool), located at the north end of Black Beach Reserve, the Ourie Pool at Werri Beach, or the Blowhole Point Rock Pool, which you can find on the north side of Blowhole Point. At the latter, a shallow wading area suitable for very little swimmers is also available.
TRACK STARS
Whatever your wheels, pack the scooter, bike or pram and cruise along a section of the Kiama Coastal Walk. Your kids won’t have a chance to get bored. Not when there’s whales to spot and playgrounds begging to be explored. There’s a range of different routes along the 22km path. We recommend beginning at the Continental Rock Pool and following the path to the Big Blowhole, past Storm Bay, and continuing through to Surf Beach. And don’t worry, there’s a stop in there for the bigger kids, too. Terralong Street has many places to grab a takeaway coffee for your trip.
EXPLORE AWE
It’s been likened to one of the sets of the movie, Avatar, and it’s not hard to see why. The spectacular Minnamurra Rainforest Centre in Budderoo National Park is sure to set imaginations alight. Wander the network of elevated walkways through the rare remnant rainforest that once reached throughout the Illawarra, feel your senses awakening as you listen to the birds and be soothed by the spray of the waterfalls. Keep your eyes peels for rainforest residents – perhaps the superb lyrebird, eastern water dragon or swamp wallaby. There’s also a picnic area by the river, so make sure you pack your hamper.
